Within a given city there are countless boundaries, those which are real/physical define space through a set of policy-driven and societal rules. Then there are the invisible barriers, and these are the boundaries which divide communities and people with myriad scales of space. Alternative community engagement practices from urban art movements can help bridge these divides and provide individuals/communities barred by these boundaries.

Community engagement fulfills a human desire to innovate. In the urban setting, social innovation encourages productive conversations about urban perspective based on race, gender, and wealth - community engagement can break down power dynamics and get individuals from all types of backgrounds speaking on a level playing field.

Guerrilla art gives agency to disenfranchised groups of people. When employed as a tool for community engagement, the individual becomes empowered by their art, the anonymity of their vocalization, and the impact is noticeable through reactions and use of the art, be it graffiti, mural, or constructed hoax.

Sceneography and performance-based placemaking are tools from urban art movements which have the power to enliven urban space. Communities might utilize these practices to communicate their values and begin a movement of collaboration with designers, planners, and developers towards a more just and thoughtful urban landscape.
